Dimensions and application conditions should be among the first details you look for.
Consider two halo-lit logo signs that appear almost identical on a website.
One may be:

Is the Sign Type Similar?
Start with product construction, not appearance.
Two signs can display the same logo while requiring completely different manufacturing skills.

Suppose your project requires 1,400 mm high exterior channel letters. A 250 mm indoor letter set proves basic fabrication skill, but it does not fully demonstrate experience with larger metal shells, longer LED runs, structural rigidity, segmented packing, or higher installation loads.

Judge sign workmanship by checking repeatable details across several completed projects, not by choosing the best-looking installation photo. Review metal seams, face alignment, acrylic edges, paint finish, illumination, color consistency, wire exits, mounting preparation and packaging. For illuminated signs, ask for daytime photos, nighttime photos and pre-shipment lighting video. Consistent results across different sizes and production batches are stronger evidence than one perfect sample.
A useful portfolio review should answer a simple question: what would you notice if the sign arrived at your warehouse tomorrow?

Are Faces and Edges Clean?
Start with areas visible before the sign is even switched on.
For channel letters, zoom in on the returns, corners, backs and joints. Long straight sections should appear straight rather than wavy. Curves should follow the artwork smoothly. Corners should not look twisted or excessively filled with grinding marks. A painted return should have a reasonably even surface without obvious dents, exposed weld marks or heavy scratches.
Do not judge a 1,500 mm exterior letter using the same close-range expectation as a 300 mm reception logo. Viewing distance matters. Is Illumination Uniform?
For illuminated signs, workmanship should be judged both with the lights off and with the lights on.
A beautiful daytime letter can still produce poor nighttime illumination.
Ask for a full-sign lighting photo taken straight from the front, followed by a short video moving across the complete sign. Video is useful because exposure changes and isolated bright areas are harder to hide.
Look for four common problems:
- visible LED hot spots;
- darker areas between modules;
- weak illumination at stroke ends;
- different color or brightness between letters.

Review photographs containing several letters from the same set. Look for differences between faces, returns and backs. For painted metal, watch for visible shade differences, uneven gloss, surface contamination or inconsistent coating around corners.
Brushed stainless steel requires another check: grain direction should follow the approved orientation. Mixing horizontal and vertical brushing across adjacent letters can look wrong even when every letter uses the correct stainless-steel grade.
Mirror stainless steel should be inspected for scratches, dents and damaged protective film. Reflective surfaces reveal imperfections quickly after installation.
Brand-critical colors should not be approved from website photographs alone. Camera settings, white balance, lighting conditions and computer screens can all change perceived color.

Are Mounting Details Controlled?
Good workmanship does not stop at the visible face.
A sign can look excellent on the factory floor and still create hours of unnecessary installation work when stud locations, wire exits or templates are wrong.
For projects manufactured overseas and installed locally, mounting preparation deserves almost the same attention as appearance.
Check whether portfolio projects show or mention:
- stud positions;
- mounting holes;
- paper or rigid templates;
- raceways;
- backboards;

- installation accessories.

For blade signs, bracket geometry matters even more because the sign projects away from the wall. Check whether brackets appear square, properly aligned and appropriate for the cabinet size.
For halo-lit letters, stand-off consistency affects both installation and light appearance. Different stand-off distances between letters can produce visibly different halos.
Before shipment, ask for:
- rear-view photographs;

- template photographs;

Those images are rarely glamorous, but they often reveal more about production discipline than the finished storefront photograph.
Is Workmanship Consistent Across the Batch?
One of the easiest mistakes during portfolio review is studying the best unit instead of the whole order.
For a project with 20, 50 or 100 signs, workmanship needs to remain stable across production.
Compare multiple units for:
- overall dimensions;
- letter depth;
- color;
- acrylic fit;
- LED color;
- brightness;
- wire length;
- mounting-hole location;
- power-supply specification;
- accessory quantity;
- packaging format.
A sample establishes the target. In-process inspection determines whether production continues to follow it.

One oversized sign proves fabrication experience; dozens of controlled, repeatable units prove production capacity.
A common mistake is to judge capacity from the biggest photograph on a factory website.
A manufacturer may have completed a 6-meter sign once, but your project could involve 35 storefronts, 120 individual sign sets and several delivery dates. The production problem is completely different.
